FROM THE TOUR

HOME GAME IN NEW ORLEANS

I'm excited about the Compaq Classic of New Orleans this week. Having been a life long resident, it's always been a special week for me. Now, even more so that I am involved with the non-profit organization that runs the tournament, the "Fore!Kids" Foundation.

I take a lot of pride in the accomplishments that have taken place over the last few years. The tournament has really improved to the point I would consider it one of the top ten events on TOUR. The strength of field has improved and the purse is one of the highest of the year.

My involvement with the tournament and being the only golfer from New Orleans that is a veteran member of the PGA TOUR makes this a big week for me. I do a lot of things off the course that are a little distracting to me but I enjoy helping showcase the city.

In my duties as a host for the event, I try to book players into some of the popular restaurants in
New Orleans. Emerils is one special place where I have a connection. General Manager Tony Lott has been great in helping out, as well as Rene Bistro's General Manager Leo Verde.

For the guys who like to gamble, I send them to see the Harrah’s Director of Casino Development Steve Lazar, who happens to be a childhood friend of mine. It's one of the best casinos in the world and is right here in town.

Hopefully when the bell rings Thursday I will be able to focus on playing some solid golf and not entertaining. The dream scenario is to win the tournament Sunday afternoon. It would be an unbelievable feeling personally and would make a lot of people in this city extremely happy. One thing is for sure, if I did win, there would be a party that would rival Mardi Gras come Sunday night. I would be the one throwing champagne over everybody. It's what dreams are made of!

As I said, it is always a big week for me, but this year takes on a bigger importance because Thursday is my 38th birthday. I don't remember ever starting out the first round of a tournament on my birthday in New Orleans.

Tuesday night my manager Bob Kennedy had a birthday party for me at his home and invited over TOUR players Scott McCarron, Brain Watts, Grant Waite and Jay Williamson. After dinner, we had some pretty heavy duty ping-pong playing. It was very heated, a little more heated than on the golf course. Normally a calm competitor on the golf course, Jay has a little "anger management" problem when it comes to ping-pong. The rest of us played table tennis and Jay played Ping-Pong. I'm proud to say that I defeated the champion Scott McCarron in a tight match that went down to the wire.

Anyway, I look forward to a great week in New Orleans!.
